We are in Farnese, a typical medieval town of Tuscia, in Northern part of Lazio also known as Maremma. The city situated on a hillside, is made of a particular rock known as “tufo,” where the houses and its narrow streets seem to have been practically carved into it. At sunset the walls of the city shine in golden light as the sun rays hit its surface, it is a must see.
The name “Farnese” comes from the presence of an ancient type of Oak tree found surrounding the area called Farnie, which today are almost extinct. But, Farnese is also the name of a powerful family, in which one of its descendents became a pope, “Paolo III Farnese.”
The town has many delightful historical and naturalisitic sites to visit. In the town itself, there is the palace of “La Rocca dei Farnese,” the church of “Parrocchiale” where once inside we can admire the paintings of the painter “Antonio Maria Panico, “ and the church tied to the Monastery of the Cappuccini monks, where the floors are made of precious marble, and it hosts the tomb of the Farnese family. The civic museum of Ferrante Rittatore Vonviller also deserves a visit. These monuments are all immersed in a magical setting, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, surrounded by rivers and natural reserves with ancient Roman and Etruscan ruins. Hence, it is in this scenery that in the march of 2002 the Restaurant “La Piazzetta del Sole” opened. Miriam and Antonella created a precious corner of marvelous cuisine, hospitality at honest prices.
